Memorials: Family will direct
Rosalie "Rose" Kahl, 86, of Glenwood, Iowa and a longtime resident of Mills, County, died July 19, 2022, at Glen Haven Village in Glenwood. She was under the hospice care of Hillcrest Hospice.
Rose was the youngest child of John Thomas Leet and Wilda Vertura Wickersham. She was born July 21, 1935, on a farm west of Glenwood and attended Glenwood High School, graduating in 1953.
Just before starting grade school, her family moved to Glenwood and lived on Nuckolls Street. Rose met Duane Kahl in December of 1951 while working at the Rex Theater in Glenwood. They dated until Duane left to join the U.S. Air Force in August 1952. Duane and Rose married on April 23, 1953 while she was still in high school and they were married 66 years before Duane died Jan. 20, 2020. Together, they lived in Merced, Calif., (Castle Air Force Base) and Fairbanks, Alaska, (Ellison Air Force Base) while Duane fulfilled his military obligation and Rose got her first job on the day she turned 18 for Farmers Insurance as a clerk in Merced, Calif.
Duane and Rose returned to the Mineola area in 1956, where together they farmed, bought their own farm in 1962 and raised their family. Together, they became parents to a son, Albert David, and twins, Debi Sue and Danny Lynn.
In 1970, Rose began working for Don Langholtz State Farm Agency and then in 1972 for Dr. M. C. Fernald DDC both in Glenwood. In 1999, Duane and Rose moved from their Mineola farm to a home in Glenwood. After 33 years supporting Dr. M.C. Fernald, she retired in 2005.
Rose was deeply committed to her community. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola after being confirmed in 1953. She served faithfully in many capacities and enjoyed serving others in the congregation. For more than 60 years, she served alongside Duane and was actively involved in the Mineola Legion Post 705 Auxiliary. She proudly attended the Memorial Day services at the Plumer, Dumfries and Mineola Cemeteries as Duane participated for many years in the American Legion color and honor guard.
In 2009, when Duane was honored as Mills County Citizen of the Year, she was by his side, as she, too, served the Mills County Extension Office for 30 years by helping clerk the annual county fair 4-H livestock sales. She and Duane did everything together, side-by-side volunteering throughout the community. They were a great example of devoted love.
Rose enjoyed traveling, antiquing, decorating their home for each holiday and following the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She did, however, leave the making of Christmas candy to Duane.
Rose is survived by her children, Albert David (Kristen) of Sand Springs, OK; Debi (Dave) Muellner of Glenwood; Dan (Debra) of Idaho Falls, ID; six granddaughters, Suzi (Mike), Kasi (Josh), Alysia, Amanda, Julia, and Kayla (Brandon); four great-grandchildren, Dalton, Landen, Annaleise, and Liam; and sister-in-law Kate. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents; brothers, Verle, Delbert, John, Lyle, Richard, and Walter; and sisters, Betty and Ginnie.
